Calf Birth Record Sheet

A calf birth record sheet captures one birth with enough identification to link the calf to its dam and season. Record the known date and time, sex, weight with units if measured, birth type and factual notes. Mark incomplete details clearly for later review. The free sheet provides a consistent record format; it does not define a veterinary assessment or prescribe what to do at a birth.

What this record means

This sheet is an individual event record. A season register can collect many such sheets without losing the dam–calf relationship.

Who is this for?

Record keepers who prefer one sheet per calf or need a paper entry to transcribe later.

What should be recorded?

Use this review checklist before sharing your record.

Record review checklist
CheckInformation
□Dam and calf identifiers
□Known birth time and date
□Measured vs unrecorded values
□Observation notes

Example

Illustrative entry: a calf was found at 07:00 but the exact birth time is unknown. Record the observation time in notes and leave the birth time unknown instead of substituting the time it was found.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. Confirm the dam and calf IDs before filling other fields.
  2. Separate known birth details from the time of observation.
  3. Review and transfer the record without silently filling gaps.

Common mistakes

  • Observation time is not necessarily birth time.
  • A calf nickname alone may not remain unique across seasons.

Paper, spreadsheet or iPhone?

Paper works at a handover without a device. CSV makes rows easy to sort in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, but you must manage revisions and copies. An iPhone app can keep related records together; choose it when its documented workflow fits your needs. None of these formats removes the need to verify the original entry or keep a backup.

Frequently asked questions

Can this work with a season book?

Yes. Use the same IDs in both and keep each sheet attached to its event.

Does “calving ease” require a universal score?

No. The sheet accepts your recorded description; do not infer a medical score.
